When it comes time to focus, it can often feel like the mind is racing a thousand miles a second. While you might want to focus, your mind would much rather recall an argument you had in 8th grade. But while some men have no problem shutting out these wandering thoughts and focusing, some men find they need some outside help to get to the task at hand. This has caused many men to invest in Adderall, either via prescription or more illicit means. Adderall has become to de facto focus drug for college students, meaning there are thousands of men worldwide popping Adderall regularly to make it through a test. But could all this Adderall consumption affect a man in other ways? Could popping this little wonder pill too often perhaps lead to erectile dysfunction?
Turns out, in some men, Adderall consumption actually can lead to the development of erectile dysfunction. But that’s not to say that Adderall is frying the sexual synapses in your brain; rather, Adderall-based ED stems from a more benign source: loss of libido.
In layman’s terms, Adderall is a nervous system stimulant. The pill is composed of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine, which come together to affect the neurotransmitters in your brain, thus allowing the brain to become laser focused. But because the drug pushes the brain to only focus on certain neurotransmitters, Adderall can lead to dips in other parts of the brain, namely, in general energy levels and libido.
When a man’s libido level drops, not only does sex become less desirable, it also makes it harder for the brain to translate sexual pleasure into an erection or orgasm. Thus, even if a man finds himself in a sexual situation, the brain may be unable to convert sexual feelings into an erection due to the loss of libido preventing the needed sexual signals from being sent.
That’s not to say that a man that utilizes Adderall occasionally will end up grappling with erectile dysfunction. Loss of libido related to Adderall typically develops when Adderall is taken regularly or more than prescribed. If you feel as though your Adderall is causing you to develop erectile dysfunction, speak with your doctor.
