What underlying medical conditions or disorders are most likely to lead to ED?

Men with certain underlying medical conditions face a significantly higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Cardiovascular disease, which includes atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque on the inner wall of arteries, is perhaps the most closely connected to ED. Also closely related to the cardiovascular disease is high blood pressure, a condition characterized by reduced blood flow due to constricted arteries. However, a number of other diseases and disorders can put a man on the fast track to ED.

Diabetes, a disease in which the body is unable to produce or respond to insulin naturally, takes a serious toll on both blood vessels and the nervous system, both of which play a key role in erectile function.

Although the connection might seem very tenuous, obstructive sleep apnea is also likely to increase a man’s risk of ED. In OSA, the tissue at the back of the throat collapses, blocking the airway. This leads to a start-stop pattern in breathing, which in turn makes it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.

Although the link between OSA and impotence is not fully understood, some medical scientists have theorized that insufficient sleep decreases the body’s production of testosterone, leading to a decrease in the sex drive and difficulty in getting an erection.

Does lidocaine spray help delay ejaculation?

A few years ago, the FDA approved an over-the-counter topical spray specifically for helping sex last longer for men. The active ingredient is lidocaine, which is the same stuff doctors use for local anesthesia? And apparently, it works. But the right amount of use varies from person to person, and will probably require a certain amount of trial and error, just as with numbing creams. In fact, one danger of the numbing spray is that it can work so well (particularly if the man also uses a condom) that sex begins to feel like a chore, which is hardly great for your relationship. Many men will find it ultimately more satisfying to use too little of this stuff than too much of it.

How is numbing cream used for best results?

Though specific user instructions may vary, typically the creams should be applied to an already-erect penis. After waiting five to 10 minutes, you should take a tissue or washcloth and wipe away the excess before actually engaging in sex. Ideally, the sensation will be less intense, and you’ll last longer than you would otherwise.

The thing is, these products don’t “know” the difference between you and your partner and will work on any tissue it comes into contact with. Therefore, it’s especially important to wipe off any excess cream before commencing sexual activity so as to avoid transferring any of it to your partner, on whom it would have the same numbing effect.

Can Numbing Cream Help Me Last Longer in Bed?

On average, the time from commencing sex to orgasm is about five to 10 minutes for most men. Yet most men (71%) want to be able to last longer than that.

Premature ejaculation is defined as ejaculation that happens less than one minute into the sexual act. If it happens only occasionally, it’s not considered premature ejaculation – only if it happens on a regular basis and is causing distress or relationship issues.

Premature ejaculation that happens rarely isn’t considered a medical problem.

Various products exist that you can purchase over-the-counter to apply topically to decrease sensation. Some men find that these numbing creams help them last longer during sex, but like any drug (prescription or over-the-counter) there will be side effects you’ll want to take into consideration.

Viagra is incompatible with nitrate-based drugs What Other Drugs Contain Nitrates?

Q. I know that Viagra is incompatible with nitrate-based drugs, but I’m really not sure which drugs contain nitrates. Could you list them, or at least give me an idea of which drugs should be avoided while I’m using Viagra?

A. Of the various nitrate-based drugs, the generic category most familiar to the general population is nitroglycerin, which is prescribed to treat the chest pains caused by angina pectoris. Most often, the tiny nitroglycerin tablet is placed under the tongue to dissolve and hopefully relieve the pain.

This drug is available under a long list of brand names, including Deponit, which delivers the drug via a transdermal patch; Minitran; Nitrek; Nitro-Bid, also available in ointment form; Nitrodisc; Nitro-Dur; Nitrogard; and Nitrogen. Other brand-name nitroglycerin medications include Nitrolingual, which comes in an oral spray; Nitrong; Nitro-Par; Nitro-Time; and Transderm-Nitro.

Another category of nitrate-based drugs is isosorbide mononitrate, which comes in tablet form under the brand names Imdur, Ismo, and Monoket and is prescribed to treat angina. Prescribed for both angina and heart failure, isosorbide dinitrate is sold under the brand names Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, and Sorbitrate.

Other nitrate-based drug categories include erythritol tetranitrate, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and sodium nitroprusside. These latter three are sold under their generic names and are prescribed to treat angina and/or intractable high blood pressure.

Does my diet in general affect erection health?

It certainly does. Not only is that enormous cheeseburger likely to delay effectiveness of Viagra, a diet that’s too high in fats, simple carbohydrates, and processed foods puts you at higher risk of coronary artery disease, a condition that is strongly correlated with erection problems.

No one is saying you have to eat rabbit food all the time, but limiting the heavy foods to special occasions and making sure your everyday diet is high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean sources of protein can help you keep your arteries healthy. That includes the arteries that serve your heart and the ones that serve your reproductive organs.

A great diet along with regular exercise can improve erection health, with or without the help of prescription erectile dysfunction medications.

Excess consumption of alcohol can also contribute to erectile dysfunction. Most men have experienced the occasional erection problem due to overindulging. But frequent, heavy drinking itself can cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. It can also play havoc with your blood glucose levels (whether or not you have diabetes), potentially affecting your long-term erectile health.

I’ve been told that it’s dangerous to take Viagra while also taking nitrate-based drugs. I take a nitroglycerin tablet to relieve the pain of angina as needed, but I’m also struggling with erection problems. How long after taking one drug is it safe to take the other? Or is it unwise for me to use Viagra at all?

You’re probably best off to avoid Viagra altogether. Consult your doctor. The active ingredient in the drug and the nitrates in nitroglycerin pills both work in much the same way, lowering blood pressure to allow improved blood flow. Taking both of these drugs can cause a precipitous drop in blood pressure, which could be life-threatening.

This sharp drop in blood pressure is particularly dangerous for patients who have angina. As blood pressure drops, blood flow to the heart decreases, which can increase the chances of having a heart attack. It should be noted that some angina patients should avoid the physical stress of sexual activity altogether.

While sexual activity is permissible for those with chronic stable angina, those with unstable angina should avoid sex until the causes of their unstable angina have been addressed through cardiac catheterization.

Should I stop taking Adderall if I have Erectile Dysfunction?

Never stop taking Adderall suddenly. Withdrawal should be done gradually, under a doctor’s supervision.

You should not stop taking Adderall unless your doctor advises you to. Furthermore, you shouldn’t take Adderall or similar drugs recreationally. If you have been taking Adderall regularly and suddenly stop, you can experience an emotional “crash” as well as physical withdrawal symptoms. Abusing Adderall is more likely to result in an emotional crash than taking it as directed by a doctor. Suddenly stopping Adderall can cause depression, panic attacks, irritability, and even suicidal thoughts. You definitely want to come off Adderall under the supervision of a physician.

In some men, simply understanding why the use of Adderall can lead to erectile dysfunction can help them let go of enough anxiety to be able to function sexually. If you’re a man taking Adderall or another stimulant, and you believe it is causing you to have erection problems, you need to broach the subject with your doctor. You might be able to lower the dose, enjoy the benefits of it, and reduce anxiety-producing effects enough to help with erection problems. Some men may successfully change from taking an extended release version of their ADHD medication to traditional, fast-acting medication, which gets out of the body faster and can allow a degree of “recovery” to where sex is possible.

Your doctor can help you determine if your erection problems are being caused by your ADHD medication, and if so, what to do about it. He or she may want to explore other possible causes of erectile dysfunction, like hormonal imbalances, heart disease, diabetes, or other medications (including antidepressants). And as with men in general alcohol and nicotine consumption can contribute to erection problems, whether they’re caused by circulatory problems or loss of libido.

Adderall is one of many drugs that can interfere with a man’s ability to have a strong erection and satisfying sex. But it doesn’t affect circulation to the penis – its effects are more roundabout, though no less real. Abusing Adderall can not only negatively affect your sex life, but many other aspects of life, so there’s good reason for it being a controlled substance. Whatever you think may be causing your erection difficulties, the place to begin addressing them is in conversation with a physician.

Is Adderall use associated with erectile dysfunction?

Adderall and Adderall XR are associated with erectile dysfunction, and though it does so in an indirect manner, it can nonetheless be stressful for men who take the medications. Adderall in some people has the effect of dampening libido, and this is what leads to erection problems. Most erectile dysfunction is caused by a physical condition that limits the amount of blood flowing into the penis during sexual stimulation. Adderall and drugs like it don’t affect blood circulation in the penis, but they can produce anxiety and quash sex drive, and when this happens, sexual functioning can suffer.

This is not to say that every man who takes Adderall will have erection problems. It’s only when the drug is abused, or taken regularly for a very long the time that the possibility of erectile dysfunction increases.

What’s the difference between regular Adderall and Adderall XR?

Regular Adderall starts to work more quickly and the effects (and hence, side effects) don’t last as long as those of Adderall XR. The “XR” stands for “extended release.” Some doctors and parents prefer Adderall XR for school age children, because in many cases it can be taken once in the morning and last all day. Ordinary Adderall lasts four to six hours on average, while Adderall XR tends to last far longer – up to 12 hours.

The choice of short-acting versus long-acting ADHD medication depends on many factors.
