Hi I am Dr. Daniel Williams, What Causes Erectile Dysfunction? It is actually a syndrome, it’s not a specific entity, so lets explore what causes it and how we can define it into practical terms that we can use every day, so you can discuss this intelligently with your physician and keep an eye out for early indicators in your own body of early severe coronary artery disease. Erectile Dysfunction is a collection of symptoms. A man is unable to either achieve an erection to last long enough to perform intercourse, there is no erection at all, or it kind of dies out before the sexual activity is finished. For our purposes here we are going to look at the causes of Erectile Dysfunction. So there are basically 3 categories that can lead to this problem.

1. The one we can do the most about medically is the vascular cause that is that not enough blood flow can actually get into the penis to cause the erection or it leaves too soon or there is vascular disease itself inhibiting the adequate blood flow for a number of reasons its Vascular.

2. The second one is Neurogenic. This is there is some kind of nerve injury, inherited disease state or other kind of Metabolic disease influencing the nerve and not allowing it to do the types of nerve activity that are involved with the erection, ejaculation and softening of the penis afterwards. That’s a Neurogenic.

3. The third and final cause we are going to discuss here is psychogenic. That’s probably a bad word and going to go out of favor, we don’t like the word physco, but what this means is mental causes such as stress or depression or performance anxiety or pressure or a bad relationship if it’s unhealthy and the sexual activity seems forced, unnatural that you are being judged in some way. All these things can affect you sexual performance.

So medically speaking its easiest to go ahead and treat erectile dysfunction from a Vascular cause. Nerve injuries are a lot more difficult and the result are a little slim. And Physcogenic typically a physiologist or psychiatrist will kind of coach people through this. There are sex therapists as well that can help address underlying issues. So for the most people experiencing therapeutic medications for erectile dysfunction it typically a vascular problem that being treated with Viagra, Cialis or Levitra something like this. These medications work to dilate the arteries and veins in the penis so that blood can flow more easily and cause an erection. Estimates are anywhere from 60% to 80% of men will experience some satisfaction and improvement, though it can take men up to a week to experience relief.

So if you have a disease in your penis that’s Vascular in nature there is a chance and a big correlation that you have vascular disease elsewhere in your body, such as in your coronary artery or your brain that could lead to stroke. It’s important that if you are experiencing any erectile dysfunction symptoms that you discuss this with your physician and that you can be properly evaluated for vascular disease. There was one study that involved 27,000 men they found out that 58% never told their physician that they had erectile dysfunction symptoms. So if you are interested in what cause erectile dysfunction enough to watch this video, pay close attention to those statistics and your own body, what ever you do discuss this with your physician so that you to can make the most intelligent decisions.

Most Asked Questions: What are the Common Side Effects of Viagra

Learn Answers to the Most Asked Questions About What are the Common Side Effects of Viagra by Dr. Williams of ED Questions.

Hi I’m Dr. Daniel Williams of the Men’s Podcast for EDQuestions. Today I am here to discuss the side effects of Viagra. They are very similar to the other Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, so lets discuss them in length. The most common ones are that are fairly mild, things like headache, feeling like you have an upset in your stomach, flushing in the face.

Extremely rare are some reports of temporary sudden loss of vision or hearing. That sounds like it could be pretty dangerous, most of the reports were in the very elderly say 65 and older. I am not trying to be insulting, but that was the report so much so the FDA has to put a black box label warning on these medications and the whole class of medications that was a possibility.

And if you were taking Nitrates or Alpha Blockers for chest pain because you have Angina or your Coronary Arteries aren’t very big and you have to take some medications to open them up, then you don’t want to take Viagra or the other Phosphodiesterase inhibitors such as Levitra or Cialis. The reason is because if you take them at them both at same time, they can work together to cause an uncontrolled dilation of your vessels, so it’s important to tell all of your doctors all of your medications.

Don’t leave anything out, I find it best if you will write down all your medication history and any diseases that you have into a short form or report, keep a copy with you or in your car and if you have to go to your doctor, take a copy with you. If your ever in the emergency department, make sure you tell them you are on Viagra or Nitrates or Alpha Blockers. You don’t want to run into this serious complication.

Other than that, the side effects are generally mild, it’s only something like 2% of people that take Viagra that actually quit it because of side effects, so 98% of people don’t experience these type of things at all, so I would take that as a comfort. Most advertisements for medications that come direct to consumer on television have long, very long crazy lists of side effects and some of them sound terrible. Buy they are forced by law, they are required to report every side effect that was ever recorded. And occasionally some of those side effects may not have anything to do with that drug, but they are required to report that.

So discuss that with your doctor, I am always going to say that, I am not practicing telemedicine here with you, you need a prescription for these medications, so I hope that this answers the questions about the side effects of Viagra.

Talking to Your Doctor About Erectile Dysfunction Problems

Here are the transcripts from Dr. Williams Talking to Your Doctor About Erectile Dysfunction Problems?:
Today I am going to talk to you about a very alarming statistic, there was a multinational study done in the United States, UK and Canada involving over 27,000 patients. The results of this study really got my attention, I would like to share it with you. They reported over 58% of patients with symptoms of erectile dysfunction never told their doctor. This is an alarming number, there is not a lot of data or research on this subject, other then some studies that show that erectile dysfunction hurts relationships and that silence in a relationship about sexual problems also hurts the affected person.

A more alarming statistic to pay attention to is how many times you personally are able to satisfy yourself or your significant other in a sexual way. The reason is, that this could also be a sign of early, severe coronary artery disease. Many people don’t understand the link between vascular disease and all of the organ systems. We are used to hearing about strokes, we are used to hearing about heart attacks, where the arteries get clogged with cholesterol and plaque and that sort of thing. We have known about this for quite a while but it also happens in the penis, and you can have, you know you can double or triple your risk of coronary artery disease if you experience symptoms of erectile dysfunction at a relatively younger age.

So when you put the two statistics together, that first of all, the 58 percent of men never tell their doctor, and the earlier these symptoms hit you, the more at risk you are for severe coronary artery disease, and I would extend and add on to that list, of plausibly stroke, and every other thing, like kidney failure and everything involved with vascular disease as we know it. You know don’t take it lightly, as guys, we joke about these sorts of things, if you really experience these sort of symptoms, its very important to talk to your doctor.
